What do Riggers do?

Understanding the Role of a Rigger

Riggers are essential workers in many industries, such as construction and entertainment, as their main job is to help move heavy loads safely and efficiently. This work requires a mix of skills, safety knowledge, and physical strength. Riggers work with cranes and other equipment to ensure everything runs smoothly during lifting operations. As a leading provider of rigging solutions, RMS Cranes recognizes that rigging is not just about moving materials; it is also about problem-solving in dynamic environments. That is why we have compiled some information about what riggers do.

+ Find out what a Crane Operator does

1. Planning Lifts and Assessing Risks

The first thing a rigger does is plan the lift. This means figuring out the best way to move the load and checking for any dangers. Riggers look at the weight and shape of the load to decide how to lift it. They also assess the site to make sure it is safe for lifting. Proper planning helps prevent accidents and ensures that safety measures are in place before lifting begins.

2. Selecting and Inspecting Equipment

Riggers choose the right equipment for each lifting job. This includes selecting items like slings, hooks, and shackles that will secure the load. Before starting, riggers also inspect all the equipment to make sure it is in good condition. Regular checks are important for specialized rigging because they help prevent accidents. If a rigger finds any damaged gear, they will report it and make sure it gets fixed or replaced.

3. Rigging Loads

After planning and checking equipment, riggers move on to rigging the load. This involves attaching the rigging gear to the load securely, using various knots and techniques to ensure safety. They often work in teams, communicating well to coordinate their actions. Proper rigging is vital because a load that is not secured properly can fall during lifting, leading to serious accidents.

4. Operating Lifting Equipment

In many situations, riggers operate the lifting equipment themselves, using cranes or hoists to lift heavy loads. Riggers need to understand how to control the equipment safely and efficiently. They must watch the load closely while lifting and react quickly to any problems that arise. Good communication with other team members is crucial to ensure everything goes smoothly during the lift.

5. Ensuring Safety Compliance

Safety is the most important part of a rigger’s job. They must follow strict safety rules to protect themselves and others. This includes wearing the right personal protective equipment (PPE) and following safety procedures during lifts. Riggers also often train others on safe rigging practices to promote a safe work environment. By knowing and enforcing safety standards, riggers can help reduce the risk of accidents and injuries on the job.
